I recently had the opportunity to meet Tico
Almeida of FARA (Formula & Automotive Racing
Association) and Joe Orriols, of Bullseye Powder Coating,
which led to a great conversation about the future of
F.A.R.A. in South Florida. This conversation eventually led
to a discussion regarding the possibility of creating a new
series dedicated only to Classic MINIS beginning in 2008.
A Brief History into F.A.R.A.
Since the early 1960’s through the early 80’s, there
were many races being held in South Florida in which many
professional drivers and past racing champions often
participated. These races were geared towards and
participated in by the Latin community of South Florida.
In 2007, F.A.R.A. is once again involved in providing South
Florida racing to the Latin community, having held two races
at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in May and June. Two more
races, September 8-9 and December 22-23 are scheduled to
take place at the same track in the upcoming months at the
Speedway.
A Classic Mini Racing Series
This would not be your average “Sunday autocross”, as
the series would be comprised of six races in 2008,
sometimes lasting up to an hour per race, and all being held
at the famous Homestead-Miami Speedway! The series will only
include Classic Minis!
Initially there will need to be 15 – 20 classic Minis
registered to start up the series, and each race would have
an affordable entrance fee. That will provide Mini owners
with a reasonable way to experience the adrenaline rush and
thrill of racing on a world renowned racetrack.
The main focus of this series is to present the best
possible drivers and teams at a great track, in a cost
effective environment. Each Classic Mini owner that
participates will be able to test their skills and
experience the thrill of racing on a professional race
track.
I personally had the opportunity to take my Classic Mini on
to the track at Homestead, and just touring the track and
those high banked turns was an experience I will never
forget – and that was just cruising at 50mph. The
opportunity to race at locations like this would be a
tremendous experience.
Safety
Safety is a major concern within F.A.R.A., and their
attention to detail in this respect is exceptional, making
sure that all drivers, teams, and fans enjoy the thrill of
racing in a safe environment.
The safety guidelines for a F.A.R.A. Classic Mini series
would include the following mandatory items:
• Full roll cage to mandatory specs
• Fire extinguisher
• Full race gear (approved Suit, Shoes, Gloves, Helmet)
• Secure the battery
• No loose items in the cabin or trunk
Along with common sense and safe driving, this is all that
is required to get out on the track and go racing! Remember
your insurance will not cover racing.
If you are interested in participating, please contact us at
British SportsCars, as we have been nominated as the
Authorized Tech Department by F.A.R.A. for such a series.
Until then, Enjoy your Mini!!
Thank you!
